Focail, back to the game

Privacy

Focail has no accounts, sets no cookies, and collects nothing that identifies you. This page says exactly what happens to the little that is collected.

Nothing is stored about who you are

There is no sign-up, no login and no password, because the game does not need one. We do not know your name, your email address or your age, and we never ask.

Your game stays on your device

Your streak, your statistics, the guesses you have made today, your chosen level and your county are saved in your own browser, using localStorage. They are never sent to us and we cannot read them.

That also means they belong to that browser on that device. Clearing your browsing data erases them, another device starts fresh, and nobody, including us, can restore them. Adding Focail to your home screen makes the browser far less likely to clear them.

Cookies, and how to say no

Focail asks once, in a bar at the bottom of the screen, before anything is set. Until you answer, and for good if you say no, no analytics code is loaded, no cookie is written and no request is made. Declining is not “loaded but switched off”, it means the code never runs. The game is fully playable either way, and saying no is the same single tap as saying yes.

If you say yes, PostHog sets one first-party cookie so it can tell a returning player from a new one. There are no advertising pixels and no social media trackers, and nothing follows you to other websites. To change your mind, clear this site’s data in your browser and you will be asked again.

Anonymous counts of how the game is played

If you agreed to it, we count how the game is played, using PostHog on servers in the European Union.

What is counted, and nothing else:

The words you type are never sent. We record that you made a third guess; we do not record what it was.

Visits to the site

Separately from the game counts above, our host Vercel measures visits to the site with Vercel Web Analytics. It sets no cookies either. It records the page visited, where the link was followed from, the country, and the browser, operating system and device type, and identifies a visit by a hash of the request that is thrown away and rebuilt every day, so it cannot follow anyone from one day to the next or between websites. It is not tied to your IP address.

Vercel is a company based in the United States, and transfers rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses. The game counts described above stay in the European Union.

Recordings of the page

If you agreed, PostHog also records how this page is used: what was tapped, what was scrolled, what changed on screen, so that we can watch back a game that went wrong instead of guessing. It is a reconstruction of the page, not video and not your camera or microphone, and it covers Focail only: nothing outside this site is recorded.

Saying no to the question at the bottom of the screen means none of it happens, and the code that would do it is never even loaded.

When something breaks

If the game hits an error, we receive the error message and the place in our own code where it happened, so that it can be fixed. That report says nothing about you.

Children

Focail is played in schools and clubs, so children play it. There is no account, no name and no email address at any point, and the game itself never needs one. Counting, the cookie and the page recordings all happen only if somebody actively agrees. The default, and the result of ignoring the question, is that nothing is set, nothing is counted and nothing is recorded.

If a child has agreed to something you would rather they had not, clearing this site’s data in the browser removes it, or write to us and we will help.

Your rights

There is no account, so there is rarely anything to look up. What is held is a count of games, not a file on you. To remove everything Focail has put on your device, including the analytics cookie and your streak, clear this site’s data in your browser.

Getting in touch

Questions about this page, a request about your data, or a word or clue you believe is wrong all go to hello@focail.com. There is no account behind any of this, so there is rarely anything for us to look up, but write anyway and we will answer.
